Babette Bohn (Texas Chris tian University\, Fort Worth Texas) was the featured lecturer. \n\n\n\n Bologna produced more women artists than any other Italian city during t he early modern period. This presentation analyzes why Bologna was uniqu ely receptive to women and considers the characteristics that set Bologn ese women apart from their contemporaries elsewhere\, challenging some e xisting assumptions about how women became artists during this period. K ey factors include unusual artistic patronage\, local legends about lear ned women\, and the growing acceptance of female students who were not f amily members in male painters’ workshops. Beginning with Malvasia in 1678\, local writers created a new genre of literary encomia celebrating female artistic achievement\, an oxymoron in an age that defined artist ic invention as male. Bolognese male writers turned the accomplishments of their female compatriots into cultural capital for promulgating Bolog na’s greatness. Bolognese women’s achievements included a shift from portraiture to history painting\, numerous public commissions\, and unu sual diversity\, including painters\, printmakers\, embroiderers\, and e ven sculptors. They are also distinctive for their engagement with drawi ng\, which linked all these female artists with the intellectual claims of disegno\, fomenting a novel understanding of female creativity.\n\n\n \nThe lecture was held in the Aula Magna of the former monastery of Sant a Cristina that now houses the Department of the Arts –Alma Mater Stud iorum\, University of Bologna\, in Bologna\, Italy and was followed by a light reception. \; URL;VALUE=URI:/events/2017-ias-kress-le cture-bologna/ UID:urn:uuid:c782e46c-31c2-4fcc-9f12-19130df419d3 STATUS:CONFIRMED ORGANIZER: DTSTAMP:20240904T051121Z DTSTART;TZID=America/Chicago:20170607T160000 DTEND;TZID=America/Chicago:20170607T160000 LOCATION:Alma Mater Studiorum\, Universita di Bologna END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
